This leads to defensive behavior, further fueling the tension between the in-group and the out-group. Discrimination and its self-fulfilling prophecy play a major role in the maintenance of prejudice and inequality. The victims of discrimination blame those who act in discriminatory ways.

In turn, those with prejudice blame the out-group for putting themselves into their own predicament, and harbor resentment against them for pointing fingers. The result of all of this is the perpetuation of stereotypes, which provide a backbone for discriminatory practices.

Take for example the uproar caused by the re-election of President Obama for his second term as President. These opinions, which have evidence that prove the contrary, are rooted in racism. In this case, the racism was the prejudice, and the threat to secede was the discrimination. The self-fulfilling prophecy comes into play in several ways. Obama supporters might say that the secessionist states are acting in a typical racist way.

Their opposition could respond by saying Obama supporters only support him because of his race. Both of these stigmas have been reinforced, and the conflict continues on. Culture will often play a large role in what types of prejudices develop.

Someone from a tribe in New Guinea has no idea about Americanized prejudices such as tattooing or skin color. They may, however, have very strong prejudices about what type tree will make the best boat. They may think the people that live in an adjacent tribe are all thieves.

Prejudice is about passing judgment. Often that is why the word is associated only with negativity. You don't hear someone say, "Mary is so prejudice about her clothes. She only wears tailored outfits. If you were to say, "Mary is prejudice about Hispanics. She thinks they are all dirty and lazy.

The association with negativity is one of the reasons the word is difficult to define. The inability to remove race and culture from the definition seems impossible. Many years of hearing the term associated with racism has permanently tarnished the meaning. One way to sum it up is to simply say that people are too prejudice about the definition of prejudice.

The ethnocentrism that occurs in result of watching the foreign programming evidently has an impact on our behavior. Probably, to a certain extent we are unable to understand the behavior of other cultures in a manner different from that one dictated by our own cultural environment. As with any social-psychological phenomenon, ethnocentrism cannot be examined as entirely positive or entirely negative.

Although ethnocentrism often put obstacles in the way of intergroup intercultural communication, it supports positive ethnical identity and keeps the integrity and specificity peculiar to a certain culture. At the same time, ethnocentrism is inevitable part of our live being a logical consequence of socialization and familiarization with another culture and understandings of other societies.

Yet, ethnocentrism can have an adverse impact on business practices for multinational corporations, because it often impedes effective intergroup interethnic and international communication Allport Interethnic comparison can be expressed in the form of contraposition or setting off e.
